Planning a trip to the Hawaiian Islands? Whether you’re exploring lush botanical gardens, lounging on secluded beaches, or savoring a slow, sensory-friendly experience, knowing what to pack for Hawaii will markedly make your journey more effortless. Packing the right essentials significantly ensures comfort, protection, and ease—especially for introverted, highly sensitive, and neurodivergent travelers.
Consequently, as a neurodivergent traveler with sensory processing disorder and sensitive skin, I’ve refined this what to pack for Hawaii list over three trips. Accordingly, each item has been chosen to support relaxation, minimize overstimulation, and enhance mindful exploration. Above all, I hope this guide makes your next Hawaiian adventure smoother and more enjoyable!
Clothing Essentials: What to Pack for Hawaii
1. Walking Sandals

Firstly, when thinking about What to Pack for Hawaii, comfortable walking sandals are a must for exploring towns, scenic trails, and historic sites. Specifically look for sandals with good arch support and cushioning. See my guide to the best women’s walking sandals of 2025.
2. Waterproof Sandals or Reef-Safe Water Shoes
In brief, if you plan on beach walks, tide pooling, or kayaking, waterproof sandals or reef-safe water shoes are essential. I’ve had my Xero Shoes Z-Trail for years, and they’ve been perfect for Hawaii’s diverse landscapes. Designed for ultralight backpacking, they undoubtedly won’t add much weight or take up space in your luggage—plus, they provide just enough grip and protection while keeping that barefoot feel. Specifically, this strap layout stays secure when swimming in the ocean, and doesn’t have the irritation of straps between toes like other sandals.
3. Swimsuits (Pack Two!)
Above all, Hawaii is all about the water, and having two swimsuits allows one to dry while you wear the other. Specifically, my latest favorite has been Vuori swimwear. The material is double-sided, making it feel especially high-quality, soft on your skin (no itchy bits!), and incredibly flattering. All in all, my last Vuori swimsuit has lasted through two summer seasons—it’s durable and built to last. For both added sun protection and cute pool-side style, consider this UV-protecting sun wrap and Ker-Sun’s other swimsuit styles.
4. Athleisure Set
Altogether, a comfortable athleisure set is perfect for both light movement and casual relaxation. While I always love how soft Vuori is, I’m also a fan of the Girlfriend Collective set. The built-in compression is soothing to the nervous system and also makes for a super flattering fit. All things considered, I’d opt for a pant legging in the winter months and a shorts legging in summer months.
5. Chill Tank & Flowy Shirt
For the most part, loose, breathable fabrics keep you cool in the tropical heat. The Patagonia Regenerative Cotton Tank is a perfect addition—it’s timeless, simple, and flattering. Specifically, I love the blue and white stripe option for my personal color palette. Overall, this cotton material is breathable and great in humidity, making it ideal for outdoor or lounge activities. Here is a cotton tank by Quince that is also great. Otherwise, another great option is the Quince European Linen Tank, which is slightly dressier and perfect for cultural outings.
6. Lightweight Windbreaker
Undoubtedly, mornings and evenings can get breezy, so a lightweight windbreaker is handy. I’ve had the Patagonia Houdini Jacket for years. Most of the day is hot, but if you need a little something extra, then this works perfectly. Additionally, it’s also super lightweight and packable, so it doesn’t weigh down your luggage.
7. Skirt & Evening Outfit
A comfortable skirt or relaxed dress is perfect for dining out or sunset walks. Undoubtedly, the Quince Tencel Jersey Side Tie Midi Dress is flattering on every body type. Specifically, this wrap dress gives just the right tropical vibe but is versatile enough to wear beyond your trip. Additionally, the Quince Washable Silk Mini Skirt can be paired this with the linen tank for an effortlessly chic look designed to keep you cool.
8. Jean Shorts & Running Shorts
Above all, you cannot go wrong with a great jean short. Here are my favorite Levi’s Denim Shorts, both trendy and long enough to avoid chafing. Another great pair of shorts you’ll need are an athletic pair, like these Patagonia Fleetwith Shorts. Unquestionably, whether stylish or athletic, comfy or cute, a few pairs of shorts need to grace your luggage.
9. Socks & Undergarments
Another key point is to pack moisture-wicking socks and comfortable undergarments to stay fresh in the humid climate. Wool is a great option for antimicrobial, temperature regulating, moisture wicking properties. Accordingly, here are the lightweight Smartwool socks I love, and the Icebreaker Women’s Merino underwear that works great.
10. Light Sneakers
Altogether perfect for light hikes, botanical garden visits, or city exploring. I love my zero-drop Altra Running Shoes—these have been a game-changer after an Achilles tear a few years ago, and, consequently, I can never go back to any other sneaker!
11. Pajamas for Hawaiian Nights
Above all, I love my Mirth pajamas. I have tested this pair for over 100 nights—they are perfect for high-humidity environments, keeping you cool at night. They’re non-toxic, organic, breathable, and lightweight. The sparse labels are even made of fabric, so there’s no irritation at all.
